Koko Academy is Born...

Why Homeschool?

I have thought a lot about this question -- why Homeschool? For me, the answers are many and varied. I want my boys to grow up learning and understanding the world around them. As their parent, it is my obligation to teach them and prepare them for life. I want my boys to learn about different cultures, countries, and people--by experience, not just by what they see on tv or read in a book. I want them to be able to try new things, learn new languages, and make new friends all over this beautiful world. You do not need to sit in a classroom to gain an education. Life is an education.

What I want to teach my boys is How to Learn! And, How to Think for Themselves! This is done through experience, through reading great literature, and observing the world around them. It is so exciting for me to begin this journey of education with my boys!

Kindle vs Nook vs Apple iPad2

I am going to get an e-reader for our homeschool, but I am trying to decide which one to buy.
Kindle vs Nook. I have read so many pros and cons for each but I am still not sure which one to get. I wish I could afford all the books that I am going to be using, but because I need to save money, I think the e-reader is the way to go. And because they are so lightweight we can take it wherever we go. Or should I get an Apple iPad2? I can't make up my mind!

Do any of my readers have any opinions? What do you use? Why?

Postcards connecting the World...

Hello Everyone,

We have just discovered an incredible website. It's called Postcrossing. It lets you send and receive postcards from people all over the world. We signed ourselves up and requested the addresses of 5 people to send postcards to. We will be sending postcards to the Netherlands (2), Belarus, Minnesota (USA), and Finland.
We can't wait to start getting mail! If you are interested in learning more. Here is the link to their website:

Welcome!

Hello Everyone!
I am excited to get started on this new blogging adventure! I want to start this blog as a way of keeping track of all of our family's youthful pursuits.

I am a stay at home mom, who is going to start homeschooling this year. I want to have a space where I can keep track of our adventures, and "Proud Mama Moments". I love the curriculum I found on http://www.amblesideonline.org and I can't wait to get started! An idea I have had is to have my sons help with the creative processes of the blog. I will let them post their ideas, projects, pictures, etc of things they have been doing in our homeschool. This is the beginning of our journey!

As part of homeschooling, I am hoping to set up a home based travel agency called Traveling Humanitarians. It's important for me to have hands on learning experiences, and one of the ways to do that is to travel. I love the idea that we can study something in history or art, and then be able to travel and go see that thing we have studied in real life. My dream is to be able to organize trips for homeschoolers, families, volunteers, and various groups where I provide them with cultural & humanitarian experiences as they travel.

Tonight I just joined a group of homeschooling bloggers. I am so excited to read what others have to say, and learn about what others do in their homeschools. I am so new at this- I need all the ideas I can get!
